چکیده

With an increase in the number of patients with malignant tumors, managing various symptoms of terminal ill cancer patients has become essential. Malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) is a serious complication commonly observed in advanced gastrointestinal or ovarian cancer patients. MBO interferes with the oral intake of food and causes painful symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Therefore, patients’ quality of life (QOL) is significantly impaired. Palliation of symptoms from obstruction has traditionally been performed by gastrointestinal drainage and total parenteral nutrition. Surgical management has also been considered in patients with significant life expectancy (Davis and Nouneh, 2000; Ripamonti and Mercadante, 2005; Tuca et al., 2012). Current treatments for inoperable patients with MBO include medication in addition to gastric or intestinal intubation. However, drug therapy such as antiemetics has not achieved satisfactory effects in palliating the

Management of malignant bowel obstruction.

Malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) is a common and distressing outcome particularly in patients with bowel or gynaecological cancer. Radiological imaging, particularly with CT, is critical in determining the cause of obstruction and possible therapeutic interventions. Although surgery should be the primary treatment for selected patients with MBO, it should not be undertaken routinely in patient...

Medical treatment for inoperable malignant bowel obstruction: a qualitative systematic review.

The use of symptomatic agents has greatly improved the medical treatment of advanced cancer patients with inoperable bowel obstruction. A systematic review of studies of the most popular drugs used in the medical management of inoperable malignant bowel obstruction was performed to assess the effectiveness of these treatments and provide some lines of evidence. Randomized clinical trial comparing octreotide and scopolamine butylbromide in symptom control of patients with inoperable bowel obstruction due to advanced ovarian cancer

BACKGROUND The aim of this randomized controlled study was to determine whether octreotide (OCT) or scopolamine butylbromide (SB) was the more effective antisecretive drug controlling gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms due to malignant bowel obstruction (MBO) caused by advanced ovarian cancer. METHODS Ninety-seven advanced ovarian cancer patients with inoperable MBO were randomized to OCT 0.3 mg/...

Home parenteral nutrition for patients with inoperable malignant bowel obstruction.

The use of home parenteral nutrition (HPN) in patients with inoperable malignant bowel obstruction (IMBO) is controversial. The efficacy, safety, and indications for HPN in these patients is uncertain, and its benefit is difficult to demonstrate. The records of 17 patients (9, ovarian cancer; 4, colon cancer; 4, other) with IMBO receiving HPN managed by the Nutrition Support Team (NST) at Yale-...

Clearing bowel obstruction and decreasing pain in a terminally ill patient via manual physical therapy.

Decreasing pain and improving function and quality of life are important topics for patients that refuse, or are not candidates for traditional medical interventions, and those at end stages of disease. Patients with inoperable, metastatic bowel carcinoma that experience pain and small bowel obstruction (SBO) as a result of adhesions are a subset of these patients. The standard treatment, adhes...
